Fundamental rules

The Andrew Murray Prize Fund (hereafter called the Fund) wants to encourage excellence in the Christian media world by awarding work of a high quality in Afrikaans and all the other languages of South Africa.

1. Prizes and awards

1.1 The Andrew Murray Prize for Afrikaans Christian Books is awarded regularly to the author or authors of the best Christian book published in the preceding period of time (see 3.6). All Afrikaans Christian books, except academic theological books, will be considered for this prize. The prize may consist of a gold medal, prize money and an address.

1.2 The Andrew Murray Prize for Afrikaans Theological Books is awarded regularly to the author or authors of the best academic theological book in Afrikaans published in the preceding period of time (see 3.6). The prize may consist of a gold medal, prize money and an address.

1.3 If and when the Executive Committee (see 3) sees fit, an Andrew Murray Prize may be awarded to an Afrikaans Christian product of outstanding quality in the printed and electronic media. An exceptional career in one or more of these media may also be awarded with the prize. The prize may consist of prize money and an address.

1.4 The Andrew Murray-Desmond Tutu Prize for Christian and Theological Books is regularly awarded to the author or authors of the best book (Christian and/or academic theology) published in the preceding period of time (see 3.6) in any official language of South Africa. The author or most of the authors of the winning title should be a citizen/citizens of South Africa (double citizenship is acceptable). The prize may consist of a trophy, prize money and an address.

1.5 If and when the Executive Committee (see 3) sees fit, an Andrew Murray-Desmond Tutu Prize may be awarded to a Christian product of outstanding quality in the printed and electronic media in an official language of South Africa. The winner/winners should be a citizen/citizens of South Africa (double citizenship is acceptable). An exceptional career in one or more of these media may also be awarded the prize. The prize may consist of prize money and an address.

1.6 If and when the Executive Committee (see 3) sees fit, a Special Andrew Murray or Andrew Murray-Desmond Tutu Award may be awarded to any person or institution that made an exceptional contribution to the Christian media world. The award may consist of prize money and an address.

1.7  The Desmond-Tutu-Gerrit Brand Prize for Promising Authors is awarded regularly to a promising or first-time author in the Christian media writing in an official language of South Africa. The prize may consist of an address and prize money.

1.8       The Andrew Murray-FAK Award for the Promotion of Church Music is often awarded to persons who made a special contribution in the field of church music. This prize is made possible by funds made available by the FAK.

 

2. Members of the Fund

2.1 The Members of the Fund consist of one representative of each of the institutions that became part of the Fund as per agreement and chose to be member of the Fund.

2.2 In the case of any member resigning or for some reason not continuing as a representative of any institution mentioned above, such institution may nominate another representative and inform the Executive Committee (see 3 below) accordingly.

2.3 The Members of the Fund meet at least once a year as the Board of Members. The chairperson and vice-chairperson of the Board of Members may also be chairperson and vice-chairperson of the Executive Committee (see 3.2). The Board of Members may carry out its work by means of correspondence.

2.4 The Board of Members approves the Fundamental Rules and any alterations thereof, elects the members of the Executive Committee, approves the financial statements of the Fund, discusses issues important to the Fund, and may propose suggestions to the Executive Committee.

2.5 A quorum of the Board of Members is formed by the presence of at least forty percent (40%) of the members in person or by means of power of attorney. In the case of a tie of votes the chairperson has the casting vote.

2.6 The Board of Members has legal personality and the chairperson may on behalf of and with the consent of the Board of Members be part of legal proceedings in any court within the Republic of South Africa.

 

3. The Executive Committee

3.1 The Executive Committee consists of seven (7) members, including the chairperson and vice-chairperson. They are elected by the Board of Members with alternating terms so that two (2) members retire every year (but are eligible for re-election).

3.2 The chairperson and vice-chairperson of the Board of Members are also the chairperson and vice-chairperson of the Executive Committee (see 2.3).

3.3 The task of the Executive Committee is to make sure the Fund is managed according to the Fundamental Rules. They also decide which prizes will be awarded when, and approve the winners of the prizes and awards and the prize money, according to paragraphs 3.9 and 3.10. They take into consideration every other relevant issue submitted by the Members of the Fund or the Board of Members. The Executive Committee decides how the Fund may be strengthened financially, and approves expenses and the yearly verified financial statements for submission to the Board of Members. They meet as often as necessary. Minutes of the meetings of the Executive Committee are sent to the Members of the Fund regularly to keep them up to date.

3.4 The administration of the Fund is handled by Bible Media in a way agreed upon with the Executive Committee and with regular reports sent to the Executive Committee. If the Board of Members should decide otherwise, twelve (12) months notice should be given to Bible Media.

3.5 The Executive Committee contacts media institutions every year to enter publications or products of high-standing quality for these prizes published in the preceding period of time, which is determined by the Executive Committee.

3.6 The Executive Committee may decide that publications or products not entered should be considered for the prizes.

3.7 If appropriate, a publication or product may be entered more than once with the approval of the Executive Committee.

3.8 The Executive Committee nominates knowledgeable persons to judge, independent of one another, the entries for the different prizes, and to submit motivated recommendations to the Executive Committee.

3.9 In the light of these recommendations and after consultation with the Members of the Fund, the Executive Committee decides which publication, product or persons should receive the prizes.

3.10 In the case of 1.3, 1.5 and 1.6 the Executive Committee may also ask for nominations for prizes/awards and, without appointing judges, decide upon these prizes/awards after consultation with the Members of the Fund.

3.11 An appropriate honorarium, as approved by the Executive Committee, may be given to the judges.

3.12 A quorum of the Executive Committee is formed by the presence of five (5) members. In the case of a tie of votes the chairperson has the casting vote. Voting by way of power of attorney is allowed. The Executive Committee may also carry out its work by means of correspondence.

 

4. Amendments

4.1 These Fundamental Rules may be amended after prior notice of at least 21 days and with a two-third majority by the Members of the Fund.

 

5. Dissolvement

5.1 Based on a decision of a two-third majority of the Members of the Fund, the Fund may be dissolved.

5.2 In the case of such dissolvement the investments of the Fund will be called up, the necessary expenses paid from these funds, and the balance carried over to an institution that will benefit the aims of the Fund the best.
